The Columbia Amateur Radio Club Emergency Response Team (CARCERT) was formed to build and operate a communications trailer, and respond to emergencies within the greater Midlands area of South Carolina.

The CARCERT communications trailer was formally dedicated in July of 1998. The trailer was remodeled in 2003 when a much needed (and appreciated) air conditioner was added to the trailer and the interior layout was changed to add three operating stations with HF,VHF,UHF and Red Cross Communications.

The trailer underwent it's most recent remodelling early in 2008 when the walls, ceilings, insulation and operating stations were replaced and new, more comfortable chairs were purchased (the latter very much appreciated by the operators).

In October 2008 completely new communications systems were purchased by the CARC including a new HF rig (Yaesu FT-450AT). Recognizing that the bulk of EmComm would be via VHF, three VHF/UHF rigs were installed: a new dual-band VHF/UHF transceiver (Yaesu FT-8800R), a second dual band transceiver dedicated to cross-band repeating (Kenwood TM-731a, donated used), and a new Alinco DR-135 with an added TNC for APRS and packet work. All (except the Yaesu FT-450AT) will be capable of functioning as backup to the Yaesu for 2-meter net work. New antennas and mounts for all were purchased and installed including a Tarheel HF mobil antenna. The trailer retains its push-up pole as center for inverted-V antennas.

Electrical system: AGM batteries are already installed as well as an Astron 65 amp power supply and a large inverter. Solar panels have been purchased and will be installed to maintain the charge in the batteries. The trailer will soon be equipped with a generator and the air conditioner will be replaced. We expect that the trailer will undergo improvements on a regular basis, especially as new technology is introduced into amateur radio.

The Columbia Amateur Radio Club CARCERT trailer is very well equipped, it will be extremely valuable during a disaster, and it reflects very well on the club and the numerous members who have had a hand in its development over the years.

The CARCERT trailer is dedicated to the memory of silent key past club president Bob Truex (N4QWL). The Columbia Amateur Club would like to express our eternal gratitude to Bob's parents, John and Doris Truex, for the generous donation of their late son's amateur equipment for use in the original CARCERT communications trailer. Thank You Mr. & Mrs Truex.
