The Columbia Amateur Radio Club provides a wide coverage linked repeater system with the assistance of the N7GZT Repeater Group. The repeater system consists three repeaters, all repeaters require a PL tone of 156.7hz. Usually the repeaters are not linked together, but they can be linked if needed. Please feel free to use the CARC Repeaters sponsored managed by N7GZT and let us know how they are working.
This repeater is located on the far eastern side of Fort Jackson. The repeater's coverage is mainly in an eastern direction along the I-20 corroidor; therefore it covers areas such as Kershaw, Sumter, Lee and Florence Counties.146.775 repeater has some coverage along the I-77 North Corridor through Fairfield County. Users are encouraged to report on the readability and coverage of 146.775.
This repeater is located on the tallest tower in Columbia. It provides coverage to most of Midlands Region of South Carolina. There is coverage through Calhoun County to the South and most of the Lake Murray region to the North. The recent improvements have realized mobile coverage north on I-77 to Great Falls.
This repeater is located on the tallest building in West Columbia, SC. It is the backbone of the linked system. This repeater provides coverage to Lexington County and Richland County with optimum coverage for the downtwon Columbia area.
The CARC Repeater Team is working hard to provide expanded coverage and enhanced services to the local amateur community with our repeater system. The system is receiving new upgrades in equipment and programming. There will be many new features available with the new repeater controllers.
In March 2006, The Columbia Amateur Radio Club made an aggreement with the N7GTZ Repeater Group to manage the CARC Repeaters. The 147.330 repeater with the 146.775 repeater will be under the callsign of N7GZT. We will be moving the 147.330 repeater to a prime locations which will provide optimum coverage for all users of the system. Some of the advantages include better audio levels and the ability to take the PL tone off during emergency operations, exercises or nets. Users of handheld transceivers will see improvement in their ability to communicate using the repeater. The 147.330 antenna will have a projected elevation of 495 feet above sea level at the new location which will enhance coverage. Users are invited to report their efforts to use the 147.330 repeater to determine it's true coverage.
The repeater system is undergoing a whole new outfitting to a standardized radio system. The system will utilize a modular concept that will make repeater down-time almost non-existent. The modular system will allow for the removal of the defective component and replacement of a standard part. The defective component will be brought back to the workbench to be repaired as soon as a part is available. The defective component then becomes a spare until needed. The radio components of each of the repeaters become interchangeable as well.
We hope that you will like the new changes and the enhancements to the system. Comments and suggestions about the system should be sent to the Trustee, Phil Shreves N7GZT.
